Participants in the present experiment completed a series of questionnaires (Gambling Questions, PGSI, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, PANAS, and a computerised contingency judgement task that probed the illusion of control) in laboratory settings at the School of Psychology, University of Nottingham. They were then instructed to download a simulated gambling app onto their smartphones, and were observed in the lab as they interacted with the app. Contextual and behavioural data were collected on each interaction, as well as GPS coordinates. The results show that participants were highly engaged with the simulated gambling app, and this engagement was predictive of perseverative behaviour during an extinction phase when there was no chance of winning.
